Level 1:  Fundamental Course (Beginners) – 10 weeks.
The teaching phase is the first principle used when training a dog to respond to new commands and signals (cues) that are to become part of its daily existence.  The main objective of the teaching phase is to create an association for the dog between verbal commands or hand signals (or both) and the physical actions that result in either movement or assuming stationary positions.

Owners will be taught the fundamentals of training during this time (Teaching phase):

Obedience commands:
  • Sit
  • Drop
  • step aways (stay)
  • loose lead walking
Good manner exercises:
  • stepping up to our dog
  • free by my side
  • meet and greet
  • on the mat
Behavioural problems:
  • Barking
  • jumping

All building on duration, distraction and distance work.  We also cover problems participants may be having their own dogs.

During this time you will create a line of communication with your dog – having it listen, respect and want to be with you.  Teaching your dog to calm down and be calm no matter what.

This 10 week course will teach owners the basics to a high standard.  It will enable you to control your dog on walks, having it listen to you under distractions.  The importance of good manners – how to achieve this without being in obedience mode.

At the end of the teaching phase the dog should show a consistent, correct response to the commands given and should no longer need inductive, mechanical or forced learning methods to solicit the appropriate actions.  If the above has been achieved then the dog has been correctly prepared for the next learning phase in its obedience development.  Members graduating from our Fundamental course have the option to continue on with their training.  We offer the training phase – Taking the Next Step.

Level 2:  Taking it to the Next Step – (10 weeks) (to move to Proofing Your Dog owners must show a good understanding of the method and dogs must be able to execute all exercises mostly on first command under distraction - not automatically move to next level) –Transitioning halter to flat collar

The training phase is where we take a dog which understands the basic exercises and then train it to respond automatically on command, ...every time.  The focus now is to train the dog to execute commands immediately so as they actually perform a conditioned response.  Consistent repetition, the correct use of positive and negative reinforcement and precise timing are required to achieve this much needed level of obedience/communication.

The training phase of obedience development is where the commands learned are imprinted into the dog's behavioural patterns.  How long this imprinting lasts is determined by many factors.  First and foremost is the consistent maintenance of the conditioned stimuli in which the dog responds.  If commands learned in training become seldom used or the reinforcement is inconsistent, then the dog will no longer have the need to retain the conditioned response.
The best way to maintain the dog's learning is to reinforce it through Random Practice.  By incorporating the trained skills into the dog's daily routine at random intervals and consistently reinforcing commands, the dog will retain this behaviour indefinitely.  It is up to the handler to follow all the correct principles of training in as many different areas as possible so as the conditioned response will eventually override the competing stimuli of any new environments or distractions.

For members graduating from Taking it to the Next Step there is the option to continue their training ….

Level 3:   Proofing your Dog – Ongoing class (to move to the Communication Phase owners must show a complete understanding of the method and dogs must be able to execute all exercises on first command under random distraction - not automatically move to next level) – Transitioning flat collar to off lead
The proofing phase should be done in a variety of situations and environments so as to test the conditioned response of the dog against different distractions.  True proofing would take place in totally new environments so as to provide outside stimuli not yet experienced by the dog.  Success in these situations demonstrates that the conditioned responses override the dog's instinctive behaviour as to how it would normally act in new surroundings.

Level 4:   Communication Phase – Ongoing class (Advance Off lead class)
The Canine Leadership System also incorporates another phase into the learning process that covers the continuous training and proofing that will take place in any new environment or situation through the dog's life.  This phase is in recognition of the fact that it is impossible to 'proof' for all distraction and situation combinations that could affect the dog's ability to respond to a cue/s whilst affected by the limitless, unpredictable stimuli and/or environments.
Because we are training dogs for 'life skills' rather than specific use or competition, the whole training system is aimed at producing a relationship between the dog and handler that reflects the understanding that 'generalisation' in learning is relevant to overall experience.  Training a dog is an ongoing process that involves the recognition and understanding of the 'limitations of experience' that could affect a dog's response in any novel situation.
The communication phase, therefore, is a 'maintenance' phase that takes account of the fact that a dog is never completely trained for all circumstances, but that it will become more attentive and responsive overall as life experience develops the broader base of the dog/handler communication.

CHRISTMAS PARTY:  Free to all members to be held at Whiteman Park

Classes are not run on Public Holidays OR if it is raining
